Colour me happy
Say goodbye to any of those non-committal shades of beige, tan and cream. Lots of exuberant colour is a key factor this spring.
Red is taking centre stage. Traditionally, people either love it or hate it, but if you’re in the former camp, think about embracing it from head to toe for maximum impact. If you want to mix it up, try wearing it with pink accessories, rather than black.
Blue still continues its dominance in every shade, from the palest duck egg to turquoise.
Lavender is a subtle colour injection – think a lavender silk dress, or blouse and skirt worn with a short khaki trench coat.
Pink has been popular for seasons now and it’s not going away, especially with the launch of the Barbie movie. Choose any pink that makes you happy but think about how you accessorise: pale pink looks great with black, and bright pink works better with navy or green.
On trend
It’s safe to say that there are no strict rules anymore about what to wear, but there are definitely influences that can punctuate a new season. Some of the more whimsical updates for spring include:
Mohair – This fluffy fuzzy 50s staple is back in pretty pastel colours. A cute mohair sweater or cardigan and long-line skirt have a classy retro feel, perfect worn with a low-heeled pointy-toe slingback.
Sensible skirts – Lose the mini and opt for a longer-length skirt, either split on the thigh or with an asymmetric hem. These longer lengths are actually far more versatile when it comes to accessorising as they look great with boots (flat or high) or heels and wedges. Pair with a tailored blazer for a pulled-together and ultra-feminine race day look.
History repeats – Call it the Bridgerton effect but there are some historical influences in fashion right now that are perfect for racing, such as corset tops and crinoline skirts. Avoid going full 19th century by wearing these pieces with tailoring, such as a corset or bodice top under a jacket, or a full skirt with a silk blouse.
Silver linings – Silver is making a statement at present, seen everywhere from liquid lamé dresses to heavily silver-studded bags and shoes. Think of this metallic as a neutral, and pair it with any colour, but especially pinks, blues and purples.
In the bag
There is certainly a wide field to choose a winner from in the handbag stakes, but let’s start with some key styles.
Quilted classics – the ultimate ladylike bag that is always on point. Pull out your vintage ones!
Crescent-shaped bags – they tend to be soft and pliable and can be tucked under the arm, either large or small, in pretty colours.
Bucket bags – smaller in size, and with a longer strap.
Y2K influenced bags – small, hard and flashy in bright neon colours or shiny silver.
Stealth-wealth style – following the low luxe trend set by shows like Succession. Think neutral colours, discreet hardware, and luxury leather.
Well shod
When it comes to shoes, it’s best to look at your outfit first and then choose the correct shape of the shoe to go with it.
Kitten heels – kitten-heeled slingbacks are back. Wear them with a full skirt.
Mary Janes – a versatile style for dresses, trousers or a neat coat.
Wedges – in all colours and heights, these are having a moment, so you may want to plan your outfit around them.
Knee-high boots – look great with a straight skirt.
Last but not least, hats and headpieces
Take inspiration from the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, where we saw so many beautiful hats. They ranged from whimsical to a mere suggestion, such as Jill Biden’s tiny bow style paired back with her lavender-blue skirt suit and gloves. I don’t believe there are any rules when it comes to hats – whatever makes you happy is the goal.
